Not your father's cab

New tractors feature tantalizing creature comforts

The future of farming was displayed in full grandeur at the 45th National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, KY this month. As in the years before, producers dispersed among rows of glistening machinery to catch of glimpse of what’s new. But it’s not just about being bigger or more powerful these days—it’s also about the operator experience.

Helping operators work more comfortably and productively has become an industry wide trend, and the results are visible especially in today’s tractors. Changes in cab design are much more than an extra cup holder or wider seat; every detail is designed to provide superior comfort, convenience and control throughout the workday and best suit the needs of modern producers.

“It’s always exciting to see what new features they come up with for tractors,” says Iowa farmer, Ray Hinkley. “When I first started driving tractor 30 some years ago you never thought about things like comfy seats or controls—it was all about the work, about horse power and pulling equipment.”

For those who have endured the past generations of tractor cabs like Hinkley, the improved designs are a welcome feature. “I remember what is was like to bounce around in a loud tractor cab all day, it would just wear your body down,” Hinkley says. “But with these new tractors and better cabs it’s quiet and comfortable-- some days it hardly feels like work at all.”

Climb into a John Deere 8RT Series tractor and try out the CommandView II Cab. It offers a roomy work environment, easy-to-use monitors and controls and better visibility. The seat is built using cut-and-sew cushion construction, adjustable backrest angle, and lumbar support controls for increased operator comfort. Many of the features and controls that were on the right-hand console have been integrated into the CommandARM. The controls and CommandCenter now follow the operator as the seat swivels for added comfort. The 7-in color display is divided into three regions and can be partially configured by the operator to monitor three tractor functions of their choice. Overall, the series offers 10% more cab volume, 7% more glass area and four times more storage area over the previous CommandView cab.

Relaxing into something red from the Case IH Magnum series is easy with the Surveyor cab. Take in the view with panoramic curved glass; comfortable, positive response seat; and ergonomic armrest controls. The right-hand controls in all Magnum models include: Speed, direction, hydraulics, hitch, PTO and end-of-row switch all within reach, integrated gear/throttle control handle, and an optional electronic joystick. With six power outlets, ample storage, and a large workstation to the left of the seat to holds papers, a laptop computer or other items it could be a functional mobile office.

For those who prefer the blue hue, New Holland’s T7000 tractor offers plenty of creature comforts. The ultra-quiet, high-visibility cab boasts 63 square feet of glass providing an unobstructed view in every direction. A high-visibility roof panel also provides an upward view for loader work. The new Sidewinder II armrest electronically slides forward or back to suit each operator and includes a standard multi-function controller, throttle and electronic draft controls that travel with the seat. Additional features for the cab include a new cool-box option for keeping beverages and snacks chilled and a standard enhanced keypad for tracking engine hours, distance traveled and more.

The AGCO DT Series tractors also stepped up to the plate with a totally new cab design. The 4-post cab has a 28% increase in cab space, giving it the largest cab in its size class. It features more room for the person in the instructor’s seat, a redesigned armrest-mounted console that puts all key functions where they are most convenient and one of the quietest interior sound ratings in the industry at just 71 decibels. With a larger field cooler and a field office that includes a cell phone holder and outlet this cab is ready for hours of work.

Regardless of the size, shape or color it’s obvious that tractor cabs have come a long way over the years. “If it wasn’t for the better equipment and new cabs, I couldn’t keep going like I am,” Hinkley says. “Farming is hard work but the new improvements make it much easier.”

Telling the agriculture story in the social media age

Keeping Up


Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, LinkedIn.

Chances are you've at least heard of these terms. They are all part of the rapidly growing social media network - the set of free online tools that allow the building of relationships between individuals sharing interests, information and ideas.

But why should farmers and ranchers care? Why should producers take the time to log on to social media? It's pretty simple: social networking sites offer the opportunity to reach millions of people with just a few clicks. These are tools that aren't just for teenagers or the tech savvy anymore. Social media has become mainstream - a place where the agriculture voice is not always heard.

"Social media offers us the ability to reach the 99 percent of the population that isn't in production agriculture," said Debbie Borg, chairman of the Nebraska Soybean Association who farms with her family near Allen, Neb. "When people understand why we do what we do, they are okay with it. But if they don't know, then all they hear is the other side."

Borg joined Twitter in March 2009 (user name @iamafarmer2) she's on Facebook and has a blog (www.ouragstory.blogspot.com). She Tweets about the daily happenings on the farm to followers from around the country.

"The consumer is so removed from the farmer that there is a growing awareness of wanting to know more about their food," Borg said. "It's become very obvious that we in agriculture must start talking with those outside our neighborhoods. Social media is a great way to reach more people with things we do on the farm everyday. If I can educate just one person a day, that's one more person who knows the truth."


It might start with educating just one person, but the numbers and breadth of social media are impressive and still growing.

Facebook, the popular social networking Web site, allows friends, classmates, colleagues and others to connect and share photos, messages and information about their lives with people in their network. It has more than 350 million users, and if it were a country, it would be the fourth largest in the world, according to Nielsen Co.

The newcomer in social networks, Twitter, is a cross between text messaging and blogging, where users are prompted to answer the question, "What are you doing?" in 140 characters or less. The site has grown 200 percent in the past year and estimates more than 26 million users in 2010.

Video sharing Web site YouTube is now the second largest search engine in the world and uploads 13 hours of video every minute of every day.

All of these networks and others can be linked together and even carried with you on your iPhone, BlackBerry or Driod to keep you constantly connected and updated.

"Social media allows us the opportunity to tell our story from the comfort of our own operations instead of having to leave our businesses and travel to speak to the public," said Lincolnville, Kan., rancher, Kim Harms. "In essence, social media outlets allow us to invite the public into our lives, homes, families and businesses to see the truth - not just hear others opinions."

Fruitful Plains

A mouth watering look at Kansas grown produce.


For some Midwest farmers agriculture is not about amber waves of grain, but rather the fruitful plains.

Nestled near the Kansas River just east of Topeka is a fruit farm with roots deeper than the apple trees they grow. The sole survivor of an area that once bustled with fruit and vegetable production, Rees Fruit Farm has more than 100 years of experience under their belt and is still going strong.

“As long as there have been Kansas farms, there have been Kansas orchards,” says Rex Rees who owns and operates the farm with his wife, Shannon. “It has its challenges but you just have to find a way to adapt.”

Their farm consists of roughly 5,000 fruit trees including 19 varieties of apples and 14 varieties of peaches. Cherries, grapes, tomatoes, asparagus, pumpkins, blackberries and a plethora of other fresh produce and goods can be found in the Rees Fruit Farm market.

The establishment is also home to award winning apple cider and the original Sweet Apple Cider Slush, a trademark of Rees Fruit Farm that continues to be a top seller.

How did the farm keep going through the years when other didn’t? Rex says it was a combination of things—including luck. “We’ve always had a retail market” he says. “We have a good location; close to the city but on a side that is less developed. The land isn’t so valuable that we can still afford to farm it.” Another key ingredient to success: satisfied customers. “We’re always trying new things to keep up with trends, and keep people coming back.”

Growing fruits and vegetables in the Midwest is not always easy. Like every farm, they must deal with what they’re dealt and in some years that means turbulent growing conditions. High temperatures, low temperatures, humidity, insects, disease; it’s not the most ideal place to grow—but it works.  “The thing about locally grown produce is that it doesn’t look like what you get at the grocery store, but the taste is so much better,” Rex says. “Our tomatoes may not be identical and flawless, but they taste delicious and that’s what matters most.”

Consumers craving locally grown produce are seeking out fresh fruit stands and farmers markets like never before to have a taste. In 1987 (the first year markets were surveyed) Kansas was home to 26 farmers markets. Today that number has almost tripled to the current census of 80 markets statewide.

Irrigation Face Off

Center pivot or subsurface drip?


Farmers are professional decision makers. In every aspect of their work they are faced with choices and options to consider, even when it comes to irrigation systems.

Subsurface drip irrigation or SDI, a low-pressure, high efficiency irrigation system that uses buried drip tubes or drip tape to meet crop water needs is one option. SDI technologies have been a part of irrigated agriculture since the 1960s; with the technology advancing rapidly in the last two decades.

But how does an SDI system stack up to the more popular center pivots that roll over many of the irrigated acres in the Midwest?

“SDI systems are generally thought to be at least as efficient in terms of irrigation water use as center pivot irrigation systems, primarily because they avoid the evaporative losses that occur from exposing irrigation water on the soil surface and in the open above ground environment,” said K-State Extension Specialist, Daniel O'Brien.  “At K-State we have used conservative estimates of 10-20% water savings efficiency with SDI compared to center pivot irrigation.  In field situations were irrigation water availability is not limited, these efficiency gains may not be that important.  But where irrigation water supplies are more limited, 10-20% efficiency gains in irrigation water use could be extremely important and beneficial to an agricultural producer.”

It’s the system’s efficiency that attracted producers Jim and Jeff Reinert, a father/son farming duo from Ensign, KS. Their farm includes two separate SDI systems both 60 acres each, one with 30 inch tape the other with 60 inch.

“The thing you ultimately look for is the value of water,” Jim said.  “As water becomes more and more important to us, it’s something we need to do a better job of conserving.  We also want to be more efficient with our water allocations in relation to our acres. If we can maximize the productivity with a drip tape system to better use our water—that adds a value that is extremely important. Everything we can do to conserve water can only work in our benefit. I’ve been irrigating for the better part of 50 years and I hope my son has that same capability.

International Windmill Trade Fair coming to Kansas


Swiftly turning blades atop soaring towers have long claimed residence to the Midwest skyline. There presence sprung from necessity, but now the windmill is an icon of agriculture and rural life on the plains. Evoking thoughts of days gone by and sometimes satisfaction that certain things never change.

Windmill Fair 051The history and people behind these water pumping structures are almost as iconic as the windmill itself. Windmillers, dealers, restorers, collectors and enthusiasts from across the country and beyond, will soon unite at the 21st Annual International Windmillers’ Trade Fair, June 3-5 in El Dorado, Kan.

“The purpose of the Trade Fair and Convention is to buy, sell, trade, show and talk about water pumping windmills,” said organizer Chuck Jones of Benton, Kan.  “Some bring their junk iron to sell, some come to buy the junk iron.  Others come to see all the different kinds of Windmills and to learn more about them.  About a third of attendees are full time windmillers, a third collectors, and the other third just like windmills and the other items that go with it.”

The loosely organized group of steadfast windmillers has met in many locations over the years, but never before in Kansas. “We are really looking forward to the windmillers coming,” said Darla Stewart of the El Dorado Convention and Visitors Bureau.They’re really a great group of people with good camaraderie. They swap and trade parts, share stories and pictures of unearthing windmills and learn about what the others are doing.”

The trade fair will feature historical tours, social events and all-day vending. A lecture will be presented by noted windmill historian, T. Lindsay Baker. Baker is the author of “A Field Guide to American Windmills” which is considered to be the windmillers’ bible and the most comprehensive book on the subject.

Good to the last droplet


Keys to calibrating your sprayer to get more bang for your buck




A miscalibrated sprayer is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get. Maybe you’ll get proper coverage or maybe it’ll be lost to drift.

Accurate calibration is the only way to know how much chemical is being applied to your field. Even with the current use of electronics to monitor and control the application of crop protection products, a thorough sprayer calibration procedure is essential to ensure against misapplication. Failure to calibrate a sprayer can injure your crop, cause pollution and worst of all waste money.

“The sprayer itself needs to be operating as efficiently as possible,” says Bob Wolf, K-State extension application technology specialist. “Especially the first time out in the spring, you need to make sure your sprayer is all tuned up. That there are no leaks, the pump works properly, nothing is plugged and every component is functioning properly including electronics.” While that may cover the basics Wolf says there’s more to the calibration process.

“Take into account what kind of coverage the chemical will need and pick the right nozzle type to maximize it’s impact,” Wolf says. “Applicators need to consider what type of activity the chemical has, whether it needs contact area or if it will translocate through the plant, then calibrate for the system to best deliver the proper amount on the target.”

When it comes to selecting nozzles, there’s certainly a plethora of choices these days but no singular silver bullet says application technology research scientist with Syngenta, Dan Kidder. He finds nozzle manufacturer catalogs and the pesticide product labels very helpful in making this decision. “It’s tempting to try to make one set of nozzles work for all products by changing your sprayer pressure and ground speed,” Kidder says. “But with the diversity of products typically used on today’s state-of-the-art farms this strategy will almost always result in less than optimum application of some of the products. Less than optimum coverage requires higher product use rates and may cause unnecessary environmental loading. It pays to invest in several sets of nozzles for your different products. And better yet, install swivel style multiple nozzle bodies on your boom so you can change spray tips with just a flick-of-the-wrist.”

Some nozzles also produce a broader spectrum of droplet sizes, another important aspect of in terms of crop protection application. “Droplet size impacts coverage and droplet size impacts drift,” Wolf says. “Somewhere we have to find the happy medium because the common thought is smaller droplets means better coverage but we come against some things in the environment that prevent that. Smaller droplets will drift easier and some applicators overlook the evaporation concern. Especially in the Kansas and Nebraska areas that can have wind and dry conditions it’s definitely something to keep in mind.”

An adopted standard specifies a droplet size spectrum broken down into six categories; very fine, fine, medium, coarse, very coarse and extra coarse. Product labels are now featuring the recommended droplet size to improve application performance.

“Applicators are getting more and more focused on droplet size because we are learning that certain types of targets require different kinds of coverage and droplet size aspects than others and the sprayer must be set up for it,” Wolf says. “It’s going to require applicators to have a pretty good knowledge on the type of nozzles they are using and relate that to the product recommendation for droplet size.”

But how much difference does size really make? A drop is a drop, right? Not when talking about spray application, where every drop counts. “A change in droplet size has a huge effect on the number of droplets applied per square inch,” Kidder says. “For instance, reducing droplet size by half increases the number of droplets applied per square inch by eight times. Large droplets drift less than small droplets so spray losses are minimized. Large droplets also penetrate crop canopies better to reach the lower leaves; which is important for some fungicide applications. But smaller droplets cover the upper canopy better and are also better at providing some coverage on the underside of leaves.”

Kidder also suggests applicators match droplet size to spray volume. “If you’re lowering spray volume to save time, reduce droplet size to maintain quality. Higher water volumes result in higher operating cost due to more time and energy traveling to and from the refill site and soil compaction is sometimes a consideration when hauling high volumes of water back and forth across the field.”

Spray application is not what it use to be. For good reasons growers seem more focused than ever on reducing costs and optimizing sprays. “Producers pretty much know how to calibrate to get the right orifice size to deliver the right gallons per acre,” Wolf says. “But now there’s more to it, they have this droplet size spectrum concern in there and that may force them to take calibration a step further. The underlying key is to understand the application system and ensure that it is as efficient as possible so that it performs well in the field.”

8 Ways To Hire Good Help


Guidelines for finding and keeping wage-worthy employees for your farm.


“Employers today are struggling to find the right people,” says Gary Maas, president of AGRIcareers, Inc. “It’s hard to find employees who have the skills and competencies for the job, the values and behaviors that promote job satisfaction and the attitudes that motivate them to excel.”

img_0536Maas questions, how can you spend an afternoon with someone and know if you would like to work with him or her for years?

The cost of hiring an unqualified person may far exceed the time requirements of finding out if the person is right for the job. Experts say the risk of hiring a bad worker can be minimized with a sound selection process and deliberate employee management system and by following a few guidelines.

1.) Know what you need. Take time to evaluate the credentials of prospective employees says Melvin Brees, farm management specialist at the University of Missouri.

Understand the job, and you’ll understand the best possible person to fill it. There are skills, licenses, personality traits and abilities that an employee must have to be successful and employers should take no skills for granted.

Create a job description that details the tasks of the position and establishes specifications and requirements needed to do the job. Also, remember that a job description should evolve with the business, position and employee.

The best way to recruit skilled new employees is to make your business the kind of place where talented and hard-working people feel appreciated and valued, Maas says. Being a great employer makes it easier to retain quality people and develop a reputation of being the employer of choice.

Recruitment channels can include government agencies, schools/universities/colleges, want ads, private agencies and through increasingly popular Web sites. Concentrated recruitment efforts are much more effective in the long run than a shotgun approach where efforts are scattered and include random groups of people.

2) Evaluate the applicants. A complex position will require a multi-dimensional evaluation to determine if an applicant has all the necessary skills. Ask questions pertaining to specific farm-related situations and see how the person responds.

“It’s best if an employer can use his own application form to equally compare all candidates while getting information relative to the needs of the position,” Mass says. “Make sure you compare apples-to-apples so that every applicant has the same start.”

Written tests are good to gather general information and are an excellent tool when technical knowledge is required, while oral tests may help assess the applicant’s communication ability and technical expertise. Individual interviews allow potential employers and employees to get to know each other. However, some applicants may sound very impressive during an interview and disappoint once on the job, or be nervous in an interview and miss their opportunity to shine.

A practical test is useful because it requires the applicant to perform one or more of the skills the job requires, Maas says. These tests also demonstrate the applicants’ thought process—did they ask questions, prioritize tasks and keep their composure if something went wrong?

Require the applicant to provide the names and phone numbers of past employers. While keeping in mind people have different perceptions and personalities, Maas recommends looking for patterns with previous employers.

If the new employee will be working with current employees or family members, include them in the evaluation process. Also, remember that evaluation goes both ways, you may not get a great employee if you don’t put your best foot forward, too.

3) Be the boss you would want to work for. Ask yourself the question, “Would you like working for you?” No one ever said that employee management would be easy, but it doesn’t have to be difficult.

Employee surveys have shown that the most important thing to employees is working for someone they trust and having a boss that looks out for them,” Maas says.

Harvest Smarter This Fall

9 Ways to Harvest Smarter

A job worth doing is worth doing right — and when it comes to harvesting crops it couldn't be truer.

Before taking to the field this fall, consider these tips from crop consultants, Extension specialists and professional harvesters to make your harvest more efficient and less stressful.

1. ASSESS FIELD HEALTH.

Dwight Koops, Crop Quest western region vice president in Ulysses, KS, recommends that growers evaluate late-season crop health to make sure they harvest fields with potential standability problems first. “Producers will also want to watch for potential stalk rot, corn borer or stem borer problems in soybeans. Be aware of which hybrids dry down more quickly than others,” Koop says.

2.CALIBRATE YIELD MONITORS.

Taking the time and patience to calibrate a yield monitor properly can go a long way when it comes time to make important decisions from your yield data, says Randy Taylor, Extension machinery specialist at Oklahoma State University.

“You want to know how well it's doing at both high and low flow rates, and make sure that the impact plate and moisture sensors are clean before you start,” he says. “The information is extremely valuable, so make sure it's as accurate as possible.”

3. WATCH MOISTURE LEVELS.

“Fishing around for dry corn can cost money, especially at today's fuel prices,” Koops says. “Therefore, taking the time to find out which fields are ready to harvest before all the equipment is brought to the field should help efficiency.” He suggests having a quality moisture tester on hand to avoid hauling excess water to town and taking a dock.

4. EVALUATE FIELD LOSS OFTEN.

Checking behind the combine to determine field loss is important, says Mark Hanna, agricultural and biosystems engineer at Iowa State University. “Many of the losses occur at the head of the machine; making sure that you have things adjusted appropriately is valuable,” he says. “In reasonable operating conditions, loss is approximately 2 kernels/sq. ft., which equals about 1 bu./acre of loss. Combine operators should be striving for that figure — or less.”

Adjustment and clearance on deck plates is important, as well as making sure that the ear savers are present and in good repair to keep ears from bouncing out of the head, Hanna says. Losing entire ears adds up in a hurry.

5. OPTIMIZE MACHINERY WITH ADJUSTMENTS.

“Make the adjustments on your combine one at a time in order to evaluate what's going on,” Hanna says. “Be prepared and allow time to check on settings in the field. Ordinarily, you want to start at the lower speed setting and then adjust up while maintaining grain quality.”


The idea is to get as much crop-on-crop threshing as possible. When the kernels rub against each other to loosen from the cob, it's much more gentle than rubbing against steel.

Crops have the potential of being higher in moisture this year, Hanna says, which puts a premium on machine setup. “Corn cobs are going to be higher in moisture content, as well, and could be spongier,” he adds. “It's going to put a focus on making sure you get the rotor cylinder speed and concave clearance set appropriately.”

6. CAPITALIZE ON TEAMWORK.

Communication between the combine and cart or truck drivers is critical to maximize efficiency, says Lance Johnson, CEO of Johnson Harvesting Inc., Evansville, MN, a business with 48 years of harvesting experience. “The combine driver has to assist the cart driver in their operation. Both operators need to know where they will meet next and the most efficient way to make this happen,” he says.

“The best combine operator is one who knows how to run a grain cart efficiently. Any time you can have a full grain cart at the end of the field where the truck is located makes the cart much more productive and reduces field compaction considerably,” Johnson says.

7. THROTTLE BACK WHEN POSSIBLE.

While your combine has to run wide open, there is opportunity to throttle back your tractor, Taylor says. “If you can, throttle back a bit. You can still get a lot done if you're not overloading the engine and you'll use less fuel. Think about logistics — the location of your grain cart, your truck and how you harvest your fields — so that you spend less idle time with the machines running.”

8. CONSISTENCY TOPS HURRIEDNESS.

One major harvest blunder Johnson notices is that haste often makes waste. “Hastening harvest doesn't make things go faster; in fact that is when problems and accidents occur,” he says. “Any employer who tells an employee to ‘hurry up’ simply made the mistake of not managing his operation efficiently before they got behind schedule. Steady and consistent always wins over fast and furious at the end of the day; it also puts the most bushels in the bin.”

9.TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND RELAX.

Jim Gleason, Crop Quest eastern region vice president in St. John, KS, encourages producers to slow down a little and be safe. “Taking short breaks throughout the day will aid in staying mentally alert while fighting off fatigue,” Gleason says. “It is a proven fact that more accidents happen when you are worn out or distracted. Also, the driver should always be aware of his surroundings and pay special attention when children are in the area.”

Diesel Saving Advice

Secrets To Saving Fuel


Michigan State University Extension Experts say that a little effort can save a lot of fuel for tractor operators.

In a recent release MSU extension agriculture educators share tips and advice farmers can follow to get more out of the liquid gold-- diesel fuel. Here's what they had to say:

“One estimate that I’ve seen is that U.S. farmers could potentially save up to 150 million gallons of fuel each year,” says Mike Staton, MSU Extension agriculture and natural resources educator based in Van Buren County. “The strategies we suggest aren’t expensive, but do take a little time – like making sure the tractor is set up properly.”

This set-up involves making sure the tractor is carrying the proper amount of weight or ballast on each axle. Carrying either too much or too little weight wastes fuel.

Once the weight is adjusted, Staton recommends checking the inflation pressure in the tractor’s tires and making sure they are inflated properly for the weight of the axle. Weigh each tractor axle at an elevator or other location to ensure maximum accuracy.

“It’s also important to operate the tractor properly,” Staton says. “One tractor may be used for multiple tasks. On some of those tasks, the tractor will have more horsepower than the job needs, so make sure you’re gearing up and throttling down to find the optimum gear.”

Shifting to a higher gear while reducing the throttle setting can improve a tractor’s fuel use and enable it to get the most work done for the least amount of fuel consumed. When working at anything less than 70% of the tractor’s maximum load capacity, this can be a valuable practice for reducing fuel consumption.

What's Driving Food Prices? (not ethanol)

Ag Economists Analyze High Commodity And Food Prices


In case you haven't heard, food prices are going up. Go ahead... protest, panic, point fingers. It's that evil ethanol industry that's doing this afterall, how dare they use corn to make fuel, taking away from the supply and making the grocery bill go up.

Recent studies of Purdue University ag economists show that in fact the food prices are drven by a combination of factors... not only ethanol. High oil prices, the weak dollar, world production and consumption trends all add a little 'push' to the price. But that's a side of the story less often mentioned.

The following is a excerpt from the press release from Purdue University about the findings:

--- In a Farm Foundation commissioned report, the Purdue economists - Phil Abbott, Chris Hurt and Wally Tyner - highlight key factors gleaned from examining 25 recent studies plus their own analysis. Their conclusion: a complex combination of factors is fueling agricultural commodity price increases and rising food costs.

 Tyner, an expert on energy and policy issues, said the price of oil is an important factor that has increased the demand for biofuels. "About $3 of the corn price increase is due to the higher oil price and $1 to the ethanol subsidy," he said.

 As high oil prices spur demand for biofuels, the increased corn production stimulates demand for fertilizer, diesel, propane and other agricultural inputs. Prices for these inputs have also risen due to the "demand pull" from more corn being produced and subsequently the "cost push" due to the fact that petroleum products are key ingredients in many of these inputs.

A Brief History Of Barbed Wire

The Devil's Rope; Barbed Wire And The American Frontier

Most people have the opinion that barbed wire has never had more significance than its present day existence throughout the West. This mode of thinking neglects the history and the role that that barbed wire played in transforming American culture. Many technological breakthroughs have impacted the cultural history of our nation significantly. Barbed wire fencing was such a technology, and its invention and rise played a major role in the transformation of the frontier and West. Its effects were momentous, and they may still be felt and seen today.

The transition of open prairie to enclosures of barbed wire was actually a social revolution among the early-day settlers and ranchers. To some, it was a threat to job security, to others it was the only solution to continued living on the Great Plains. To most, it meant a complete change of traditions, daily work and the acceptance of a new way of life.

Since the beginning of time, man has constructed his barriers from natural materials adjacent to the barrier site. These materials were mostly wood from trees, stone, thorny brush, and mud. When settlers arrived on the Great Plains of America, they found these materials in short supply, thus creating a demand for a more economical type of fencing.

Dating back to 400 A.D., the process of pulling hot, bloom iron through dies in a drawing plate produced short lengths of various sizes of smooth wire. By 1870, good quality smooth wire was readily available in all sizes and lengths. Stockmen used the smooth wire in fencing but found it was not a dependable deterrent to livestock passage.

In 1867, two inventors tried adding points to the smooth wire in an effort to make a more effective deterrent. One example was not practical to manufacture, the other experienced financial problems. In 1868,. Michael Kelly invented a practical wire with points which was used in quantity until 1874

Joseph F. Glidden of Dekalb, Illinois attended a county fair where he observed a demonstration of a wooden rail with sharp nails protruding along its sides, hanging inside a smooth wire fence. This inspired him to invent and patent a successful barbed wire in the form we recognize today. However, Glidden along with Isaac Ellwood, a hardware merchant, and Jacob Haish, a lumberman, were all inspired at about the same time by a wood and wire device exhibited at the DeKalb County Fair of 1873. A local farmer, Henry M. Rose had created his contraption to control a “breachy” cow. Impractical as the device was, it was the inspiration that lead Glidden, Ellwood, and Haish into their experiments with barbed wire. Each man independently came up with their own fencing variations. Jacob Haish devised a design that turns out to have been similar but inferior to the design that Glidden was developing. Glidden fashioned barbs on an improvised coffee bean grinder, placed them at intervals along a smooth wire, and twisted another wire around the first to hold the barbs in a fixed position. He set about to improve his designs and he also set about obtaining patents on his inventions including a patent on his famous “S” barb that would lead to battles and much contention among the inventors.

Isaac Ellwood gave up on his own tinkering after seeing the superiority of Glidden’s design., the two men soon became partners in what would become the major barbed wire manufacturing concern in DeKalb. Recognizing a business opportunity

Glidden and Ellwood’s Barb Fence Company began manufacturing large quantities of its new wire., Glidden eagerly sold out his share of the business when the Washburn and Moen Company of Massachusetts approached the businessmen. The new I.L. Ellwood and Washburn & Moen Company soon acquired many of the existing barbed wire patents - important patents that gave them nearly undisputed control of the entire barbed wire industry. However,Haish played his part in insuring that this near monopoly didn’t come easily. It was a battle stretching into the 1880s involving the investigation of hundreds of claims, determining who had precedence, buying up patents, and defending against the claims of others. The advent of Glidden’s successful invention set off a creative frenzy that eventually produced over 570 barbed wire patents. It also set the stage for a three-year legal battle over the rights to these patents. Early on the founders of the Barb Fence Company recognized the potentially huge market for their barbed wire in Texas. However, as wonderful as its inventors and proponents believed it to be, they hadn’t reckoned on the resistance of the open range cattlemen. Before the farmers came, much of Texas was dominated by cattlemen. These weren’t land owners with vast ranches of domesticated cattle. The cattle of this era were the wild Texas Longhorns and the cattlemen practiced a policy of open range use - driving the herds from South Texas north into the Panhandle and beyond along trails that knew no fences because much of it was public lands. The cattlemen were opposed to the migration of the “nesters” as they called the farmer-settlers.By extension, they were opposed to a product like barbed wire that might make it easier for the nesters to move into “their” land.

Two sales representatives sent to the Lone Star State played different but equally important roles in the introduction and spread of barbed wire throughout the state. Henry Sanborn, a relative of Joseph Glidden,Texas in 1875. Sanborn and his partner J.P. Warner met with a great deal of resistance from the cattlemen and the farmers as well who were all skeptical of this new product. It didn’t look strong enough to hold back one mean cow much less a whole herd. And there was a natural skepticism about anything produced “in the North.” They sold very little wire and returned to DeKalb a year later. Sanborn would return later on and make his mark not as a salesman as much as a forerunner in the “closed land ranching” experiments of the Texas Panhandle. was sent to

Many historians believe one of the defining moments in the history of the West came when a small bunch of wild longhorn steers stopped and backed away from eight slender strands of twisted wire equipped with sharp barbs. This event happened in 1876 when John W. “Bet-a-Million” Gateserected an enclosure on the Plaza in San Antonio, Texas to demonstrate to gathered ranchers, that newly-invented barbed wire could securely contain wild livestock. From that moment on, the West would never be the same again.

This defining event ended the era of open range and the use of free graze which had reigned supreme since the earliest settlers began to populate mid-America. At that same time, new technological inventions and modern manufacturing equipment and processes grew by leaps and bounds providing the start of the Industrial Revolution across America.

Post-war demands for beef here and abroad, new railroads available for livestock transportation and the invention of refrigeration spawned the greatest cattle boom in the history of the new nation. The cattleman was king and his domain seemingly unending. However, the moment those longhorns stopped at the wire in San Antonio, the age of the pioneer, free-range cattleman was doomed. No one foresaw how drastically barbed wire fencing would eventually transform western life at that time and on into the future.

Sales skyrocketed- from 5 tons in 1874, the first year of production, to 300 tons in the following years, surpassing 10,000 tons by 1878 and 100,000 by 1883. Steel barbed wire became more and more common during the late years of the century, when barbed wire was to meet humans rather than cows., fences now became a cheap, labor-efficient resource and so fencing could be extended not only in space but also in its intended uses. Instead of being a prohibitive element of cost

Surely, the changes required a few hectic and sometimes bloody years in transformation, but as inevitable as sunrise the vast ranges from Mexico to Canada were slowly claimed and their boundaries fenced with wire. The greater the adversity met in claiming and fencing the land the greater the pride-of-ownership in the land by the owner.

When livestock encountered barbed wire for the first time, it was usually a painful experience. The injuries provided sufficient reason for the public to protest its use. Religious groups called it “the work of the devil,” or “the devil’s rope” and demanded removal.

The last opposition fell when the large ranches in Texas began fencing their boundaries and cross fencing within. Among the first to fence were The Frying Pan Ranch, The XIT, and the JA Ranch, all located in the Texas Panhandle. Free range grazers became alarmed the economical new barrier would mean the end of their livelihood. Trail Drivers were concerned their herds would be blocked from the Kansas markets by settler fences. Barbed wire fence development stalled.

With landowners building fences to protect crops and livestock, and those opposed fighting to keep their independence; violence occurred requiring laws to be passed making wire cutting a felony. Cattlemen weren’t concerned so much with the barbed wire as they were with the loss of the public lands where they grazed their livestock.A drought in 1883 escalated the tensions because fences blocking the way made it harder to find new sources of grass and water for the herds.

Individuals or small groups felt it was their right, perhaps even their obligation to protect the public lands. The easiest way to do this was to destroy the fences and hopefully drive the squatters from “their” land. It was a relatively easy matter to snip the wires under cover of night. Most fence-cutters went unidentified and unpunished. Their fight might have been successful or totally unnoticed if it weren’t for the fact that the cause was picked up by men with less than honorable intentions. Thieves and cattle rustlers joined in the fence-cutting and what might have remained minor incidents escalated into violence and bloodshed. While illegally erected fences were the initial target, soon legal fencing came under attack and peaceful resolution of conflicts became more difficult.

While there was some sympathy for the nobler purpose behind the fence-cutting, at the height of activity in Texas the violence, including murder, became a serious threat to Western settlement and expansion. Farming and cattle-raising alike were disrupted. It finally became necessary for the Texas Legislature to step in.

In February 1884 new laws were rushed through the Legislature to help alleviate the problems. New fence installations required that public roads remain open and gates had to be provided at intervals where fence lines met public roads. Erecting fencing without consent of the landowners became a misdemeanor.Fence-cutting was declared a felony crime with one to five years’ imprisonment. The Texas Rangers were even called on to provide protection in certain trouble spots.

In other states where fence-cutting continued it took longer to bring it under control. But quick action by the 18th Legislature effectively ended the fence-cutters’ war in less than a year in Texas.The end to fence-cutting also signaled the beginning of the end of free, open ranges for Texas cattle.

A problem arose with the advent of extensive barbed wire fencing. As large ranches started fencing their checkerboard sections, they often fenced off access to the state owned sections located in between the privately owned sections. In certain areas, the fences were deliberately placed across known trails in an effort to keep new settlers out.This brought complaints to the state that the public was being denied access to Texas Public Lands.

The state took action in the courts making a single corner post to which all intersecting cross fences were tied, illegal. The public must be allowed to access the public lands. The land owners then countered with a new concept in which they set extra corner posts for each intersecting fence, leaving an eight inch gap in between the corner posts. A person could slip between but livestock were still blocked from passage.. However, juries decided there was an undeniable gap between the corner posts as prescribed by law and the state lost. This was legal but challenged by the state

After losing their cases, the state then passed laws requiring gates to be built at regular intervals giving access along trails and to the state owned sections thus ending the “8 inch gap saga.”

Every successful major change in history that survived to call an “era” was prefaced by need,, turmoil and often tragedy. An excellent example is “The end of the open range era” signaled by the invention and development of barbed wire fences. Not only did these new barbed barriers cause a drastic change in the way business was conducted, it dictated a monumental change in the life-style and culture of those who lived on the vast prairies of the West.

The first step in the conversion from open range and its nomadic culture to totally enclosed ranges had nothing to do with bared wire. This subtle change came when open range operators established invisible boundaries around chosen public areas and hired cowboys to patrol the boundaries on a daily basis.

The riders were called “line riders,” their crude abodes called “line shacks” and their duties included riding the invisible boundaries on a regular schedule turning away stray livestock not owned by the home ranch and gathering ranch-owned livestock back onto the premises.

At times and during patrols they pulled cattle from bog-holes, chopped ice in winter, hunted predators and joined ranch roundups and branding when needed. The guarding-the-parameters effort was very expensive, effective only in moderate weather, but offered the only alternative to control cattle at the time. The choosing of invisible boundaries by ranch owners became the first step in the evolution from a nomadic open-range culture to a total enclosed permanent culture.

These structures were considered cost effective as they eliminated much of the line rider’s work thus requiring fewer employees. By 1882, many such short sections of barbed wire fence were used by larger ranches. Since these fences were not connected together and were limited in length they were little noticed and offered little inconvenience to travelers.

Newcomers arrived on the Plains almost daily adding their herds to those already in place. Winter storms caused uncontrolled livestock to drift into the protected areas of rivers and creeks where they quickly depleted the coveted winter-graze of the ranchers. Numerous tactics were tried to prevent this loss but none were successful.

Though few ranchers would admit their losses were their own fault, they learned a lesson and changed their ways of operating. Within a few short years, the ranges were properly fenced, winter graze protected and hay stored for emergency use.

Barbed wire was created as a result of a special kind of colonization taking place in the American West. This colonization had two features that set it apart from earlier colonizing episodes. First, it was new in terms of space: an entire landmass was to be exploited. Second, it was new in terms of time: the colonization was to take place very rapidly. Earlier human expansions on similar scales had taken generations, but this one took no more than a few years.

Barbed wire was undeniably integral to the growth and expansion of the United States, including Texas. It changed the face of the plains, farming, and the cattle industry. Barbed wire was a practical solution to a problem, a lucrative business, a political hot potato, a symbol worth fighting over and instrumental in taming the West.

Grain Bin Safety


Stay Safe Handling Grain 
Ways to avoid fatal grain storage accidents this fall.

Plant it. Harvest it. Store it. With wild market prices and high demand for ethanol, an increasing number of farmers will be storing. Whether you're a grain-storing greenhorn or an experienced operator; knowing how to safely manage grain is essential.

While it takes an entire growing season to produce the millions of bushels of grain harvested each year, it takes fewer than five seconds for a person to become helplessly trapped in flowing grain and fewer than 30 seconds to be fully engulfed, says Kerri Ebert, Kansas State University Extension assistant of agricultural safety. Grain-handling hazards can, however, be reduced if you follow the appropriate safety rules.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, roughly 516 workers die a year doing farm work in the U.S. Of those incidents, flowing grain entrapments alone account for an average of 12 deaths each year. All of the grain in storage is not worth the life of one farmer-- and by following basic guidelines, grain-handling accidents are preventable.

Because stored grain can trap you in seconds, there's very limited time to call for help. Ebert recommends never working alone when moving grain and staying out of bins, grain wagons and trucks when unloading.

When emptying bins, a person standing on top can become sucked into the grain when the unloading auger is turned on. "The auger typically pulls down from the top center of the grain pile creating a funnel-shaped indention," Ebert says. "As grain flows down the victim is pulled down too, even as the remaining grain flows down around and on top of the victim, until the person becomes lodged in the floor auger."

Looks can be deceiving when emptying a bin of poor quality grain too. Spoiled grain will crust over on the surface and look solid while a cavity develops below. It can also cake in large vertical masses along the side of the bin. Use caution during these situations and try to break up crusts and masses from outside the bin.

Ebert also says that people underestimate the weight and force of grain. "Most people can't pull another person out of a grain bin with a rope, even if standing next to the entrapped person," she says. "Once a person becomes entrapped, it takes much more force than you expect to pull them out. For example, when an adult is submerged to the waist in grain, it takes 300 lbs. of pulling force to extract them."

Equipment noise can block commands or cries for assistance when operating a grain bin. Make sure someone knows where you are and plan a method of communication before entering the bin or hopper. Use a cell phone, walkie-talkie, or hand signals.

If you must enter a full bin of grain, wear a safety harness with a tether or a rope tied off so it can't slip from your helper's hands. A minimum of two people should be at the end of the rope who are strong enough to pull the trapped person out or at a minimum keep their head and chest out of the grain. In an emergency one helper can call for assistance.

Never enter a grain bin, cart or hopper car when it's being unloaded. Turn off, lock and tag power to the auger before entering so that no one else can start the auger while you are inside or an automatic timer won't start the auger. Use a lockout and tag out system to ensure your safety.

When someone does become submerged in an enclosed grain bin, the most effective emergency rescue step is to cut four to eight large holes all around the base of the bin approximately five feet from the ground, Ebert says. This method removes grain in the shortest time possible and time is of the essence because of the potential for the victim to suffocate.

Also, be aware of the air quality around stored grain. Grain dust can be a mixture of particles of grain, soil, plant material, fungi, bacteria, chemical residue and the excreta of insects, rodents and birds. Spoiled grain is especially contaminated with dust and bacteria. These dusts can affect the respiratory tract in a variety of ways including inflammation, asthma, pulmonary disease, Toxic Organic Dust Syndrome and Farmer's Lung.

When grain is stored wet, it ferments and produces the colorless, odorless gas carbon dioxide (CO2). If working in this environment, CO2 can enter your bloodstream and slow breathing. Spoiled grain can also produce mold spores that become airborne when disturbed.

To help reduce reactions, Ebert suggests wearing adequate protective masks and open manholes to increase air circulation.

Animal Ag Alliance On YouTube

A New Era In Livestock Industry Promotion


--The Animal Agriculture Alliance has launched two videos on YouTube, a popular website where almost anyone can share videos. The first Alliance video focuses on the importance of moderation and balance in making dietary choices. It suggests talking to a dietitian or nutritionist about a balanced diet and warns against adopting diets based on political causes or trends. The second video points out that over 90% of America's farms and ranches are family-owned. It also explains farmers and ranchers commitment to their animals, their land and their community.

The videos feature Brad Johnson - who grew up on a ranch and went on to become an actor with credits including Comanche Moon, Crossfire Trail, Flight of the Intruder and Rough Riders. The Alliance's 60-second video on moderation in diet was accepted as part of USDA's MyPyramid Corporate Challenge, an effort to promote healthy, balanced diets and to encourage youth and adults to base their food choices on advice from nutrition experts.

"The Alliance is excited to have been selected as a USDA partner in this campaign and we are pleased to be able to offer these videos to help the public - especially youths and young adults - make responsible dietary choices and better understand American farmers' and ranchers' commitment to people, animals and the environment," said Kay Johnson Smith, Executive Vice President of the Animal Agriculture Alliance. "We are grateful to all those who contributed their time and money towards this project."

Noxious Weed Awareness

LINCOLN, Neb. - June is Noxious Weed Awareness Month, Gov. Dave Heineman recently declared. The proclamation recognizes the potential that noxious weeds have to reduce Nebraska's crop yields.


"As producers, we must protect our crops and natural resources from non-native plants that have no value," said Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Greg Ibach.

Noxious weeds compete with pastures and crops, reducing yields. The weeds also and have the potential to be poisonous or injurious to humans, livestock and wildlife.

Nine weeds are currently designated as noxious in Nebraska, including: musk thistle, Canada thistle, plumeless thistle, spotted knapweed, diffuse knapweed, leafy spurge, purple loosestrife, saltcedar, and phragmites.

Ibach added phragmites to the noxious weed list under a temporary designation in April.

Nebraskans are encouraged to report any noxious weed infestations to their county weed control authority. County weed superintendents are available to help identify noxious weeds and to assist with proper control recommendations.
  


Effective noxious weed control is the responsibility of each person who owns or controls land. If infestations go uncontrolled, legal action is set in motion by the county weed control authority.
